This Arabic language program uses a communicative, proficiency-oriented approach with fully integrated audio-visual media to teach modem Arabic as a living language. Intended primarily for college and graduate students but accessible enough for anyone, the series focuses on developing skills in standard Arabic and gradually introducing students to Egyptian Arabic, the most widely spoken dialect in the Arabic-speaking world. Continuing the Al-Kitaab Arabic textbook program, Part Three is intended to help learners reach an advanced level of proficiency. More than thirty authentic texts by writers from across the Arab world address a wide range of political, social, religious, and literary themes and represent a range of genres, styles, and periods. Although the book focuses primarily on modem Arabic, classical Arabic texts have been incorporated into some of-the lessons to introduce students to the continuity of the language throughout its history. This volume pays increased attention to the stylistic features of Arabic, and exercises are aimed at transforming passive skills into active ones. For a complete list of the components of the Al-Kitaab language program, see inside. Kristen Brustad is an associate professor of Middle Eastern Studies at Emory University.
