Description
A Textbook of Haddith Studies is an authoritative book on Haddith criticism, classification, compilation and authenticity. It offers insights into the history of Haddith, their compilation, documentation and methods for ascertaining their accuracy. It deals also with the principles of Haddith criticism (al-jarh wa al-ta'dil) and classification. It provides a wide-ranging coverage of Haddith methodology and literature for intermediate and advanced levels of study. Readership: For all those interested in Haddith, Islamic law, History and classical Islamic intellectual tradition. HADITH studies in the title of this book refer mainly to haddith methodology and criteria that seek to verify accuracy of the text and authenticity of haddith and author treatment of the haddith and its methodology is somewhat selective and does not propose to cover all of the numerous areas of this discipline; it does, nevertheless, attempt to cover most of the important headings of haddith studies, commonly known as (Ulum al-haddith). A great deal of what is presented in this book is concerned with the methods of enquiry and principles which the haddith scholars have formulated for verifying the authenticity of haddith and accuracy of its message. "Jurisprudence of haddith" might be said to be an equally acceptable equivalent in English of (Ulum al-haddith), which is, however, not usually employed in the relevant literature. One of the main objectives of methodology, whether in the sphere of haddith or other disciplines of learning, is to develop objective and scientific standards of enquiry and research. The purpose is to ensure adequate safeguards against subjectivity and error that might compromise reliability of the results of that enquiry. Methodological guidelines are particularly important to areas of research that involve value judgment and personal preference of the researcher, and also commitment to certain hypotheses in research. Religion is one such area where development of objectivity and impartial methods arc at once difficult and most valuable. Muslim jurists and “Ulama'a” have developed elaborate methodologies for the authentification of haddith with the purpose precisely to enhance the scope of scientific objectivity in their conclusions. Mohammad Hashim Kamali, born in Afghanistan in 1944, is currently Dean of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization at the International Islamic University Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. He studied law at Kabul University and did L.L.M in comparative law, and PhD in Islamic Law at the University of London, 1972 and 1976 respectively. He served as Assistant Professor at the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University in Montreal, was a visiting Professor at Capital University, Columbus, Ohio and later on, a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin, Germany. He has participated in over 100 national and international conferences, published 13 books and over 80 academic articles. His books include Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Cambridge, and K.L., 1991-998): Freedom of Expression in Islam (Cambridge, and K.L., 1997 and 1998) and Islamic Commercial Law: AN analysis of Futures and Options (Cambridge, and K.L., 2001)
