Description
This unit, developed by CIE and co-published by the National Center for History in the Schools at UCLA, provides a first hand look, through historical primary sources, at the rights accorded to women by Islam, at how gender issues were actually addressed in classical Muslim society, and at the diverse roles that Muslim women played historically. This collection of lessons broadens the scope of students' understanding of historical topics. Traditional historical topics are addressed and new perspectives are offered. Lesser known historical topics also are addressed to help give a more thorough understanding. This teaching unit is based on primary sources taken from documents, artifacts, diaries, newspapers, and literature from the period under study. The unit illustrates crucial episodes in history to help students become aware of choices made by historical figures. The purpose of this unit is to explore issues related to women in Islam as well as Muslim history. Teacher background materials consist of a unit overview, unit context, and correlation to National Standards for World History, unit objectives, introduction, lesson plans, vocabulary list, and list of key names. The unit presents four lessons for students. Lesson topics include: Women's Rights and Protections in Islam, Gender Roles and Women's Identities in Muslim Society, Muslim Women Leaders through the Centuries; Famous Muslim Women as Role Models. The first lesson covers the two primary sources of Islamic beliefs, which are the Qur'an and Haddith, and includes an outline of the rights and responsibilities of women according to Islam. The second lesson outlines ways in which gender roles are conceived in Muslim society. Lesson three provides specific examples of women achieving positions of political prominence, while lesson four offers students examples of women who contributed in significant ways to Muslim culture and society and who have served as role models to other Muslim women throughout history.
