Muslims remain largely unaware of the importance and value of the Quranic principle of al-Shura (mutual consultation) and the significant role it can play in the advancement and reform of Muslim society. In this work, the author attempts to introduce and examine key meanings and practices of al-Shura, trace its historical evolution, and explore ways in which the principle can be introduced, institutionalized and applied in Muslim societies. There is no doubt that al-Shura has been sidelined throughout the Muslim world and the reasons for this are both historically and politically complex. According to the author, although much has been written on the subject, in reality it has been at best ineffectively applied and at worst heedlessly ignored. Even today it is a hotly contested issue.
As al-Shura is increasingly associated with democratic participation in a decision-making process, debate has ignited with critics challenging the notion of equating the principle with western notions of democracy, with others claiming that the principle allows for a meaning that breaks the grip of centralized power. These and other issues are investigated with careful scholarship. Al-Raysuni concludes that al-Shura should be adopted as a way of life for all Muslims to protect their interests and as a vital tool for reconstruction and reform. In doing so he addresses the subject from some intriguing new angles, giving insight into areas hitherto little, if at all, examined.

Sayyid Abul Ala Mawdudi
First Principles of Islamic Economics collects together the major writings on Islamic economics by Sayyid Abul A'la Mawdudi (1903-79), one of the leading Muslim intellectuals of the twentieth century. Written between the 1930s and the 1960s, Mawdudi laid down the foundations of modern Islamic economic philosophy. Drawing upon the teachings of the Qur'an and sunnah, Mawdudi spelled out major elements of a new paradigm for economic analysis and policy, wherein economic pursuits take place in the context of moral values and directed towards achievement of personal and social objectives. The uniqueness of this approach lies in making efficiency and equity inseparable and interdependent. In an Islamic framework, creation and distribution of wealth become instrumental in promoting individual and social well being, enabling the economic discipline to open up pathways to economic development, social justice and human welfare.
This collection is highly recommended for practitioners, scholars and students of Islamic finance.

ElSayed Amin critiques misreadings of key verses in the Qur'an that have been used to establish violence as the relational norm between Muslims and non-Muslims. He distinguishes both Islamic jihad and armed deterrence from modern terrorism through examination of the 9/11 attacks, and proposes legal proscriptions for terrorism from the Qur'an on the basis of its political, social, and psychological impacts.

"Shariah" is one of the most misunderstood and maligned Islamic terms in the West. In the minds of many people, the word conjures up images of uncivilized Muslims whipping criminals, stoning adulterers, and confining women within their homes.
Yet, Shariah literally means a way or a path and, more specifically, the way to a watering place. Far from being a strict penal code, it is a humane, compassionate, and benevolent system of laws that guides Muslims, based on the Quran, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, and the interpretation of religious scholars.
This book is a simple and concise guide to the Shariah (Islamic law) to explain its meaning, scope and operation in practical life, as well as helping readers understand and appreciate its value and necessity in the believer's life.

A passionate and committed account of Kashmir's struggle for freedom over the last 65 years, and a close-up and personal study of its leading figure, Syed Ali Geelani, which gets behind the stereotype of Indian Muslims as terrorists. An ignored but serious global flashpoint, Kashmir is at the root of tensions between India and Pakistan, the two nuclear states of South Asia, who have fought three wars over it. The heart of the problem is the right of self-determination of Kashmir's fifteen million people, a right denied to them since 1947.
Since 1989, 90,000 people have been killed, over 100,000 have been injured, and over 10,000 are missing, and mass graves continue to be unearthed. Paradise on Fire is the story of the struggle for national liberation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, spearheaded by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. This political biography of Kashmir's leading freedom fighter reveals the true horror of the Kashmir dispute, the dynamics of this historical struggle for self-determination, and Geelani's huge contribution in leading this search for liberation.

This book compares and contrasts Islamic worldviews and Western theoretical perspectives on international relations to suggest that a combination of the two could lead to a mutually beneficial redefinition of contemporary international relations utilizing Western theoretical tools and incorporating an Islamic perspective. Particular focus is given to the Islamic concept of istikhlaf as an ontological and normative foundation, the reasoning being that all man-made social arrangements on earth , as well as international society, should be considered a realm of istikhlaf. This allows for return to an eternal and critical first principle, linking all social roles to this principle, which is that man, as designated by the Quran, is God's khalifah or vicegerent on earth. It is a statement of great magnitude.

Bioethics has developed over the last few decades into a major field of inquiry. With advances in medicine progressively transforming our understanding of what constitutes life, there is a need for medical ethics to address many of the issues and challenges arising, particularly in the fields of genetics and reproduction. Of central significance are serious moral dilemmas confronting medical experts which require a theological perspective. Yet it is secular bioethics that is defining what constitutes human life, and it is secular bioethics that is influencing policy on matters which concern us all and are likely to have grave societal impact. Is it right for a woman to act as surrogate for her sister? Or for a childless couple to resort to artificial insemination by donor? What does Islam have to say?

Taha Jabir Alalwani
This work studies the position of the Sunnah in Islam and its fundamental relationship to the Quran. The author carefully examines the sensitive issue of the development of the oral and written traditions and the problems scholars faced despite painstaking work verifying the authenticity of reports, the character of narrators, and the ever growing complexity of a body of narratives that were making the simplicity and clarity of the Prophet's life, words, and actions a burgeoning maze of information. Taking the praiseworthy intention and effort to emulate the Prophet into account, the author nevertheless makes the case that once the Sunnah had been collected, the Muslim community began to neglect the Quran in favor of narrations of what the Prophet had done and said on the pretext that such narratives contained the Quran. Eventually they then abandoned the Sunnah narratives in favor of Islamic jurisprudence on the pretext that Islamic juristic texts tacitly included both the Quran and the Sunnah. It is with the aim of restoring the relationship between the two that this work has been written, that is, the Prophetic Sunnah must be tied inextricably to the Quran in a way that allows for no contradiction or conflict between the two, to avoid misapplication and abuse of hadith, and to meet the requirements and challenges of a new age.

Said Shabbar
In the early centuries of Islam the response of Muslims to problem-solving the various issues and challenges that faced their rapidly expanding community was to use intelligence and independent reasoning based on the Quran and Sunnah to address them. This practice is known as ijtihad. As the centuries wore on however the gates of ijtihad were generally closed in favor of following existing rulings developed by scholars by way of analogy.
And as reason and intellect, now held captive to madhhabs (schools of thought) and earlier scholarly opinion, stagnated so did the Muslim world. Ijtihad and Renewal is an analysis of ijtihad and the role it can play for a positive Muslim revival in the modern world, a revival based on society-wide economic and educational reform and development. It makes the case that the grafting of solutions rooted in the past onto the complex and unique realities of our own age, in a one-size-fits-all perspective, has paralyzed the vitality of Muslim thought, and confused its sense of direction, and that to revive the Muslim world from its centuries of decline and slumber we need to revive the practice of ijtihad. Focusing attention on thinking through solutions for ourselves based on our own times and context, using the Quran and Sunnah, as well as the wisdom and experience of the past distilled from these, as tools in this endeavor whilst not the only solution, is certainly a viable and powerful one.
