The objectives for teaching the Arabic language in the first part of the intermediate level are as follows:
Assist the student with the art of conversation, using classic simplified standard Arabic as the method of expression. Additionally, provide students with the ability to learn and speak Arabic fluently with confidence.
In "Reading and Archives,” enable students to read texts completely and accurately, emulating the teacher's method of reading. Furthermore, correct any errors students may have in understanding and reading the different texts.
Allow the student in "Grammar and Dictation" to gradually learn the basic language order while observing dictation and grammar rules. Also, learn to write connected sentences composed of simple texts that illustrate the vocabulary and rules taught.
Permit the student in “Verbal and Written Expression" to practice verbal expression techniques in order to vary individual style and technique. Teach the student to use acquired expressions and enhance those expressions using personal observations through individual and team activities. Finally, to analyze a text to gain understanding, and the ability to explain, summarize and remark upon it.
This series consists of 9 levels, each level consisting of a student's textbook, workbook, and a teacher book.
The two major components of this course include learning to read the Arabic script using the rules of Qur'anic recitation based on the 'Uthmani Script', as well as Arabic handwriting. It is suitable for individuals and classrooms alike. No prior knowledge of Arabic is necessary.

Graded Steps in Qur'an Reading is based on the Uthmani script used in the Madinah Mushaf at or copy of the Qur'an. This script and the way in which the vowels and other signs are written make the art and science of reading the Qur'an clear and precise. The Uthmani script is used in Arabic-speaking countries and is the Standard used by many throughout the world. Graded Steps in Qur'an Reading is intended to make this script more accessible and easy to use. It is patterned on the widely used MELS Easy Steps in Qur'an Reading with its carefully graded sequence of Units. These Units cover letter recognition and the vowels, signs and rules of reading the Arabic script. In this book they also cover the rules of Qur'anic recitation or tajwid. This Teacher's/Self- Study Edition Contains full explanatory notes In English for each page of the Arabic text. The entire Arabic text is recorded on CDs and audio tapes. Each Unit and each line of text is numbered to make it easy to follow the text and the recording. The recording can also be used with the Students' Edition. It is recommended that this manual be used with the two workbooks, Easy Steps in Arabic Handwriting. These are part of the MELS Easy Steps in Arabic course, the main aim of which Is to encourage the regular reading of the Qur'an from an early age and a love for and attachment to the Glorious Book. Complete set of Graded Steps in Qur'an Reading and Arabic Handwriting Course with books, workbooks, CDs and other audiovisual aids for teaching/learning the reading of the Arabic script, rules of Qur'anic recitation based on the 'UTHMANI SCRIPT', and Arabic handwriting. You need to be able to read and write the Arabic script as a base for learning Arabic as a language and for further study of the Qur’an. The Arabic script is phonetically precise and easy to learn and teach. MELS books, charts and audio materials make this process easy and enjoyable. Reading the Qur’an beautifully is both science and art. For the reading of the Arabic script, there is the MELS Starter Pack which includes an Alphabet Poster with an accompanying Alphabet Flashcards Pack. For reading the Qur’an, we recommend Graded Steps in Qur’an Reading which uses the ‘Uthmani script of the Madinah Mushaf, beautifully written by the Damascene calligrapher, Othman Taha. There is a Teacher’s/Self-Study Edition with full explanatory notes in English and a Students’ Edition. Each Unit and each line of text is numbered. This makes it easy to follow recording and text and is particularly helpful for both classroom teaching and individual use. The text is recorded onto CDs. Each Unit is a separate track on the CDs. You can thus go to a Unit and repeat it as often as necessary. The Arabic script is a quintessential part of Islamic art. Learn the basics of calligraphy using the MELS Easy Steps in Arabic Handwriting Workbooks. See how words are formed from individual letters, trace, copy, compose words and write from dictation. A Summary Chart shows the Arabic letters in all their forms, with Standard English equivalents and as they appear in words.

This book includes 7 educational units that center on children's environment and their everyday activities.
The units are organized as follows:
Let's Talk. Each unit begins with a conversation that includes the linguistic elements, vocabulary, expressions, and grammatical structures. The goal of the conversation is to make the learning process easy and to enable students to communicate using the language.
New Vocabulary. Illustrated words enrich children's vocabulary and provide them with new words to use.
Speaking: Speaking exercises to be completed in pairs allow children to gain fluency using the language by encouraging interaction, sharing, and communication between students.
Reading: The reading texts contain a variety of cultural topics and come in a variety of shapes in order to meet children’s needs to learn about the world around them and become cultured.
The goal here is to:
Accustom students to silent reading and understanding of the content, so that they can become independent readers.
Accustom students to reading aloud, so that the teacher can correct their reading and pronunciation.
New structures. In each unit, students practice creating a new structure of basic Arabic structures. The book presents examples that students can use to create new structures with the help of their teacher.
Supporting vocabulary. The student's book contains supporting vocabulary in the form of an illustrated dictionary in the back of the book. It includes new expressions with pictures to aid in students’ retention of the information.

This book focuses on two main techniques: (1) eliminating the fear of new vocabulary and (2) showing the rationale behind Arabic structures. The first technique relies on a simplified derivation system. The second relies on common sense and rejects traditional syntactic pedantry, which was often studied for its own sake and which discouraged students.
