Teaching language is a critical tool in communication and ultimately in the development of knowledge. In our quest to provide our customers with quality materials, we are pleased to offer the Learn Arabic series. It employs modern methods of teaching foreign language to successfully teach the Arabic language to students in K-12th grade. This series was founded upon the following three fundamentals of teaching languages presented in an Islamic context:
  1. Elements: sounds, letters, phrases, and pronunciation
  2. Skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening
  3. Linguistic Functions: introduction, greetings, description, requests, and apologies.
Series Contents:
The Learn Arabic series consists of textbooks, workbooks, and teacher’s manuals for levels K-12th grade. The textbooks aim to present basic elements of the Arabic language and their functions, while the activity books focus on enrichment material with special emphasis on writing. The teacher’s manuals offer tips on teaching Arabic efficiently with positive results.

Support Material:
Teachers will be pleased with the full array of support materials available, such as a collection of audio recordings, posters, and cards. These books also include ideas for additional activities, such as chants, competitions, and linguistic plays. All of these materials will help to make each lesson exciting and active for students.

Student Textbook:
The student textbooks are comprised of 24 units: 66 basic lessons of new material, plus an additional 6 units for revision. Each basic unit contains 4 lessons of new material, including dialogue text, expressions, and vocabulary, and communication exercises. These units contain conversations, pronunciations and expressions, grammatical structures, listening, reading, thinking, writing, and extra activities, such as selections of Qur’an, hadeeth and nasheed; where the teacher books include a midterm and final test. Answer keys can be found in the teacher's manuals.

Workbook:
The workbook simply enhances the material found within the student textbooks. They mainly concentrate on writing skills with some review of verbal skills. Each contains many different activities which can be done at school or at home, such as:
  • coloring and painting pages
  • word matches
  • reading letters and sentences
  • writing words, letters, and numbers
  • and answering questions.
Some of the activities should be completed at home with a parent to strengthen the relationship between home and school.

    Fawzieh Ahmad Bader

The book contains 15 lessons that are closely related to the students’ daily lives. As in previous editions, the direct communication approach was used in order to make do—as much as possible—without the use of an intermediate language or the need for translation.

The texts of the lessons have been selected to ensure that content meets with students’ needs at different levels. The lessons encompass a variety of topics and cater to different learning needs. The texts of the lessons are original works. They include terms that are used on a daily basis, including frequently used verbs, nouns, and collocations. An audio version of the texts is available as online audio content so that students can practice reading at their convenience. A list of new words follows the text along with words that are related to the topic of the text.

Some words are repeated intentionally due to their importance. These words are audio recorded and translated into English on the online audio content. The lessons also use dialogues on the same topic so that students have more opportunities to practice reading and retain the largest possible number of terms to integrate more easily into Arab society. This will give students greater confidence while speaking Arabic and help rid them of their reluctance to use it outside the classroom.

Lessons include a section on comprehension, where questions are designed to gauge the student’s comprehension of the text and train them to formulate answers to grammatically sound sentences. Terms are presented in a variety of ways, including illustrations, synonyms, and antonyms so as to expand the students’ lexicon.

Exercises include fill-in-the-blank and arranging words to form meaningful sentences. Grammar and conjugation exercises are designed in a gradual approach that furnishes students with basic rules to aid in learning Arabic and speaking it with as few mistakes as possible. The importance of these basic rules has been stressed in the construction of simple and complex sentences that are indispensable to students of Arabic. As indicated in the introduction to Part I, this book steers away from the traditional approach of teaching the rules of grammar and conjugation because teaching is a means not an end in itself; in other words, teaching must be functional and focus on the student.

This book contains exercises to train students on conversational skills in Arabic. Exercises include conversations between students and the instructor and between the students themselves. They aim to help students practice the correct pronunciation of Arabic phonemes through the use of words and sentences that occur in the lessons. Every lesson contains a conversation exercise.

Students are also taught to write at least one paragraph. A writing exercise on the lesson's topic appears at the end of each lesson, when students will have enough terminology to write a paragraph or more in the exercise. Instructors must impress upon students the need to pay attention to the hamza and its different forms, as well as the different conjugation marks and punctuation. Instructors should also explain the concept of silent letters (written but not enunciated), such as long vowels that occur at the end of certain verb structures as well as sounds that are enunciated but not spelled out, such as the long vowel in certain words. It is also important to explain the order in which nouns and adjectives are arranged in Arabic. (كتبوا، لم/لن يكتبوا، اُكْتبوا) (هذا، هذه، هؤلاء، لكنّ)

The lessons have been supplemented with a general revision under the heading “Test your Knowledge,” followed by two appendixes containing the conjugation of verbs and the conjugation of the singular and plural forms. The purpose of these appendixes is to help students practice basic grammatical and conjugation skills that they should be familiar with upon completing this level.

The book contains four appendixes in total.
    • Appendix 1 & 2 contain a glossary of words used in the texts and exercises of the lessons. The words are organized in the order in which they appear in the text (not in alphabetical order) so that it is easy to follow for students. The glossary has been translated into the major global languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese, as well as into Japanese and Korean. The translation was proofread by advanced Arabic language students who were native speakers of the languages they revised.
    • Appendix 3 contains the conjugation of verbs in three tenses (past, present, and imperative) with separate pronouns. Most of the verbs were mentioned in the lessons while the rest were selected because they are related closely to daily activities. The purpose is to build up the students’ lexicon, give them the confidence to use the language, and encourage them to continue studying it (which is the primary purpose in my opinion).
    • Appendix 4 is dedicated to singular and plural forms. It contains the singular and plural forms of nouns mentioned in the lessons. The reason I dedicated an appendix to plural forms is the absence of a rule that students can use to form irregular plurals, which are common and heavily used in Arabic. Foreign students—even at advanced stages—have difficulty forming irregular plural nouns.
    • Appendix 5 covers the importance of the Arab world.
    • Appendix 6 lists Arabic grammar vocabulary along with an English translation.

The online audio contains a clear recording of the texts of the main lessons, translation of new vocabulary words from each lesson, and wuestions and Answers to the “Test Your Knowledge” section.

When your child is ready to go to kindergarten, introduce him or her to the Qur'ān. The best way to do that is to begin teaching him or her the Arabic alphabet and vowel signs. After learning the alphabet, your child will be able to read, write and pronounce it correctly.

The Beginners Arabic Reading book is a step-by-step Guide to begin reading the Qur'ān. The book introduces the Arabic alphabets, gradually demonstating their beginnng, middle and end shapes and how these are used in Arabic words. The book covers all the essential vowel marks and shows the students how they are used in simple to complex Arabic words commonly found in the Qur'an. After finishing the book, a student is expected to be ready to begin reciting the Qur'an.

The purpose of this book is to introduce children to the time-tested methodologies of learning the Arabic alphabet. As the title of the book indicates, it is a step-by-step guide to start reading the Qur’ān. The materials are presented in a sequential manner to ensure that children learn the necessary tools to read Qur’ānic Arabic in the shortest possible time. The book has 29 lessons. Ideally, a Sunday school should cover each lesson in two Sundays, thus, taking about 58 classes, or two school year to fi nish the book. A full-time school or home schooling parents will require much less time to fi nish the book with their children.

    Includes:
    • Arabic alphabet in their isolated forms
    • Arabic letters in their joined forms
    • Short vowels: fatha, kasra, and damma
    • Tanween and the letter noon
    • Sukoon
    • Huroor maddah
    • Long vowels – maddah
    • Long vowels – verical alif
    • Shaddah
    • Selected Qur'anic Words
    • Selected Qur'anic Verses
    • 99 Names of Allah

    Abdul Wahid Hamid

This is the first of two graded books for teaching beginners to write, and read, the Arabic script. It is part of both the MELS Easy Steps in Arabic and the MELS Graded Steps in Arabic courses. All words used in the workbooks, except two, are from the Qur’an. The Workbook begins with patterns to encourage right to left movement. Special techniques are used to show how words are built up from individual letters. Adequate space for tracing and copying is provided. The words at any given stage only include letters introduced to that point. A variety of techniques and exercises - diagrams, tracing, word-building, word break-down, word search puzzles - are used to show how words are formed from separate letters and how to identify letters in words. The main aim of the Workbooks is to make the reading of the Qur'anic script an easy, quick and enjoyable exercise. The ability to write the script is also an essential prerequisite for the further study of Arabic as a language, including the MELS Access to Qur'anic Arabic course. These Workbooks also provide an entry into the varied, intricate and beautiful art of Arabic calligraphy.

    • Arabic Handwriting

    Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips

This is a current expanded, revised edition of the author's original work. This book presents a detailed explanation of the classical Islamic concept of God's unity as it relates to faith and acts of religious devotion. It also discusses the major areas within which the Islamic unitarian belief (tawheed) is either nullified or compromised by idolatrous concepts collectively called shirk. The uniqueness of this work lies not only in its thorough treatment of the subject in a fluid and uncomplicated English style, but is also unique in its modern presentation of classical theological issues.

True faith of a standard acceptable to Allah has to be based on tawhid free from shirk, as stated in the Qur'an and ahaddith and outlined in detail in the preceding chapters. Anything less than that represents an aspect of idolatry and or disbelief, regardless of how firmly those who join partners with God profess their faith in Him or how skillfully they rationalize their unsanctioned practices. Allah's unity must he maintained spiritually, intellectually, and practically in all facets of human life within which the pleasure of God is sought. Monotheism, as brought by the Prophets of God, was not merely a theory to be philosophically appreciated or emotionally championed, but a pragmatic blueprint for human existence in submission to the will of Almighty God, Allah. The significance of this fact lies in the purpose of man's creation. Allah said: "I only created the jinn and man for my worship" (Qur'an 51: 56).

The creation of man is itself a manifestation of Allah's perfect attributes. He is the Creator (al-Khaliq), and thus man was brought into existence from non-existence. He is the Most Merciful (ar-Rahman), and thus the pleasures of this world were granted to him. He is the Most Wise (al-Hakeem), and thus He prohibited the substances and acts which are harmful to man while allowing those which are not. He is the Most Forgiving (al-Ghafoor), and thus He pardons those who turn to Him in sincere repentance.

Abu Ayyub and Abu Hurayrah both reported that the Prophet (s) said: "If you did not commit sins, Allah would have swept you out of existence and replaced you by another people who would commit sins, ask Allah's forgiveness, and He would pardon them." Similarly all of the other divine attributes are manifest in man's creation by God's will. On the other hand, man's worship of God is for his own benefit, as Allah is in no need of man's worship. In the worship of God man realizes both his material and spiritual potential for all aspects of goodness and thereby earns for himself the everlasting abode of bliss at the end of this brief earthly journey. Consequently, the Godly way of life, Islam, provides a means of turning each and every human act, no matter how insignificant or mundane it may seem, into an act of worship. As long as the following two basic conditions are fulfilled:
    1. The act must be consciously done for the pleasure of God alone and,
    2. To be done according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (s) man's whole life can enter completely into the service of Allah, as He prescribed.
"Say: 'Truly, my prayer my sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah, Lord of all the worlds'” (Qur'an 6: 162). Such a state can only be attained through the knowledge of tawhid and its careful, conscious implementation according to the methodology taught by the final Prophet of God, Muhammad Ibn 'Abdullah (s). Thus, it is the duty of every sincere believer in God to put aside his or her cultural experiences and emotional ties to family, tribe or nation, and acquire a working knowledge of tawhid, the foundation of faith. For it is only in the application of that knowledge that man may achieve salvation.
