    Elementary School

    English

    9781936569571

Mansur Ahmad and Husain A. Nuri

The Level 1 Islamic Studies book from Weekend Learning is for 5-7 year old children who can read short sentences and write short phrases. Ideally the book is for the 1st grade students. This is their first year in a formal Islamic class. The book uses easy to understand simple and child-friendly languages and sentences. The book has 28 lessons on Allah, the Qur’an, Islam, Rasulullah (S), the Hadith and Sunnah and 5-pillars of Islam and so forth. The idea is to cover the basics of Islam. For example, 6 lessons cover the concepts of 5-pillars, 5 lessons cover short introduction to 5 rasuls and nabis, 9 lessons cover Islamic values and morals.

Each lesson begins with a coloring page. The coloring time helps students settle down and be comfortable in the class before the lesson begins. Attention span of children is small; therefore, short paragraphs introduce two or three concepts. This is followed by in-class review section to allow for short break and reinforce learning. Some homework is included in the book, however schools and parents are encouraged to buy a separate workbook that has many more test questions and chapter-based activities.

At this level, the manifestation of the Greatness of Allah in and through the creation and the importance of ihsaan are emphasized. Qur'anic studies include the memorization and recitation of Soorat An-Naba' through Soorat Al-Inshiqaaq, together with basic explanations of these soorahs. Students are introduced to narratives of Prophet Muhammad (s). The worship section deals with the adhaan, obligatory times of prayer and the importance of performing salaah with congregation. Proper care of the masjid and other public property is stressed. The grade concludes with lessons on the importance of developing good manners towards one's neighbors and others. The material is presented, using a spiral approach, where students revisit each area and study it in greater depth each year. The Activity Book, however, engages the student in additional activities on the same lessons dealt with in the Student's Textbook. The difference is that the activities in the Activity Book are more analysis - and - synthesis based, than simple recall type activities. There is also a more practical aspect aligned to activities in the Activity Book.

The ICO project is a distinguished one because:

Unit 2 covers topics on our Ibadat-focusing on the five-pillars of Islam. Unit 3 covers the stories of some of the Messengers. Unit 4 covers some other topics about Islam that are relevant for students in this age group. An early undertanding of some of the basics of Islam is presented in this unit. Introducing a comprehensive textbook for learning and understanding the 30th and final Juz (part) of the Holy Qur’an.

All 37 Surahs are introduced with historical information about the revelation of the surah. This is followed by the individual surah, ayah–by–ayah, written in traditional Othmani script and with age–appropriate meanings in English. The textbook package also includes a MP3 CD of Qur'anic recitation by Qari’ Sheikh Abdullah Basfar. Students can hear the surah repeated numerous times as they learn to recite and memorize each one.

To increase comprehension of the Arabic/Qur'anic language, each surah in the textbook contains two key sections—Qur'anic Word: Root and Meaning and Words to Know—that provide students opportunity for further study and understanding. Each surah lesson comes complete with thought-provoking questions and activities that promote the practical application of the wisdom of the Qur’an.

The textbook additionally includes 18 stories from the popular series Qur’an for Little Muslims. These stories, reflecting the selected surahs' meaning and relevance in daily life, are presented here in script form to allow for student performance and to further enhance comprehension and application of the Holy Qur’an.

Illustrated with beautiful graphics and Islamic motifs, this book is truly a groundbreaking achievement in Qur’anic education and comprehension.
