This workbook compliments the textbook Living Islam - Prophet of Mercy - The Life Story of Prophet Muhammad (s).
The Prophet Muhammad's biography, or seerah, is a profoundly inspiring story, and there is none like it in history. Many historians and philosophers, including Michael Hart, consider Prophet Muhammad (s) the most important personality throughout the human experience. In his book The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History (1978), Micheal Hart contended, "My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular levels. Of humble origins, Muhammad founded and promulgated one of the world's great religions, and became an immensely effective political leader. Today, thirteen centuries after his death, his influence is still powerful and pervasive."
We begin learning the seerah by reading about the Prophet Muhammad in the Qur'an. Then we turn to the most trusted hadeeth in Saheeh-ul-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim, and other compilations of authentic hadeeth. Next we turn to the reports of Ibn Is-haq, the Seerah book by Ibn Hisham, and the book of Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra by Ibn Sa'd. These are among the most authentic sources of seerah. Other authentic sources include the history books of Imams At-Tabari, Ibn Katheer, Ath-Thahabi, Ibn-ul-Atheer, and other historians. This book is committed to selecting the most authentic reports and narrations of the Prophet Muhammad's life story. It is needless to note that every biography of a great personality includes some unauthentic reports, and that of Prophet Muhammad is no exception. However, we tried our utmost best to present to our learners the most authentic account of the seerah as taken from its best and most authentic sources. The purpose of studying Prophet Muhammad's seerah is not simply to memorize certain dates or events, or to just sit back and enjoy the story.
Knowledge of the seerah is very important in our lives for many reasons that we can summarize in the following:
Knowing the Prophet's personality will increase our love and respect for him. It builds a better understanding of the Qur'an, because some verses were revealed for certain incidents "seerah in the Qur'an" sections in this book connect the reader with most of the Qur'anic verses that detail seerah events.
It helps us imitate the Prophet's life and learn to adopt his style of judgment. We can take him as a role model.
Living Islam sections help the reader to pinpoint the Prophet of Islam's guidance and way of life.
We can learn the fiqh rules with examples from the Prophet's seerah.
We come to know some of the companions and their characteristics.
We begin to understand some of the Arabic terms used in the religion.
Vocabulary sections throughout the book help introduce the learner to important Islamic and historical terms.
We learn some lessons from the Prophet's seerah to apply in our lives. "Lessons to Learn" section in every chapter of the books briefs the readers with important life lessons we can learn from the seerah.
The Prophet's story gives is a practical way to make da'wah (inviting people to Islam).
The Prophet's life is an excellent example for Muslims of the practical Islamic way of life.
His life conveys the spirit of the kind merciful father and the wise gentle da'i (the person that invites other people to Islam), who puts all his effort in preaching Islam.
Indeed, the seerah introduces us to the most beloved and respected leader among his companions. It demonstrates the democracy in Islam, and represents the ideal Muslim society.
Studying the seerah will expose us to all sides of humanity at its best, represented in the most complete and perfect picture.

This is the long awaited work on the history of Muslim civilization, written by the scholars who have an insider’s insight into the tradition and culture of Muslim people. This work is a concise introduction to the vast panorama of Muslim Civilization. The first volume (in the series of three) covers the period of Late Antiquity to the collapse of Umayyad rule. Instructors will be able to effortlessly utilize the book’s 50+ lessons, taking advantage of complete vocabulary listings as well as review questions supplied at the end of each. Special boxed sections provide informative glimpse at contemporary reports and primary source material. A chronological timeline of Muslim history, genealogical charts of major figures and a glossary of Islamic terms complete this educational work. The history of any given people is not only a record of its past but also a mirror of its present and a window to its future. Every society must learn from its past and work out a plan for its future. Muslim history, in many ways, is like any other, with its own fair share of villains and champions, its moments of grandeur and tranquility and its moments of failure and disappointments. But in one way it is special to itself for it is the history of the continual opportunities, offered to every man, woman and child, of realizing themselves and of coming closer to their Creator. The record of Muslim civilization is in fact the history of many different cultures and civilizations that shared one central quality; they kept alive the faith of Islam and kept alive the vision of the perfect society, which existed only once but remained an ideal for all generations. These civilizations kept alive a model of a perfect life, the model of a most generous and spiritual people, a model for each life as it comes and goes. A History of Muslim Civilization is a unique textbook written specially for the younger generations of Western-born Muslims and all those interested in learning about the History of Muslims from a Muslim perspective. This volume is the first one in the series of three. It deals with a past which can easily be divided into three parts:
The world before the mission of Prophet Muhammad.
The 1ife and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
Muslim civilization after the demise of Prophet Muhammad until the collapse of the Umayyad. regime.
The present series covers all areas of Islamic studies: tafseer, hadith, tawheed, fiqh, seerah, and general etiquette relating to different areas and situations.

The present series covers all areas of Islamic studies: tafseer, hadith,
tawheed, fiqh, seerah, and general etiquette relating to different
areas and situations. Every effort has been made to ensure that the material presented in the series is authentic, and most of the terms are presented in their original Arabic script, along with the transliteration and the translation of their meanings. This also applies to supplications which have to be memorized in their Arabic version. The aim here is to help the reader read the original text and understand its meaning. Each lesson is followed by exercises covering questions about the lesson. One striking feature in the series is the colorful artwork used in it that certainly appeals to children. This is certainly bound to attract the young readers' attention, stimulate them, amuse them as well as educate them. The series aims to acquaint the student with the teachings of Islam in every aspect: beliefs, practices and moral conduct. The series, with its unique features, certainly fills a gap in this area which has long been partially neglected.

Fiqh Muamalat is the part of Fiqh dealing with relations between people, such as the Islamic commercial law. It is the area of fiqh which governs the review process for Islamic financial products from the perspective of Shari'ah-compliance and does not have legal force in countries without explicitly Islamic legal systems that cover commercial transactions.
Muamalat is set of rules (fiqh) related to worldly matters such as business/trading/commerce transactions, lending and borrowing contracts.
Muamalat nowadays, is always associated to economics and finance since these elements are the key for happiness in this world and hereafter.

Sheikh Ali Tantawi
Iman is indeed the heart of life, especially in this increasingly materialistic world we live in! This is the first volume of the Islamic Services Foundation's three-volume Islamic Studies series, Living Islam, designed for high school and college students as well as general readers. It presents the concept of faith in Islam and its six major constructs, the six Pillars of Faith:
Belief in God
Belief in His angels
Belief in His books
Belief in His prophets and messengers
Belief in the Day of Judgment
and belief in qadar (destiny).
We have selected the landmark book on this subject, Ta'reef `Aam Bideen-il-Islam (General Introduction to Islam) by Shaikh Ali Tantawi, may Allah shower his soul with His mercy. Well-known in the Arab world and translated into English and other languages, this unique book has influenced the minds and hearts of masses of students and intellectuals around the world.
Relying extensively on the Majestic Qur'an and Prophet Muhammad's (s) guidance on the subject of faith, Tantawi presents the very wellsprings of Islamic religious tradition and inspires his readers to understand what Allah and His Prophet want us learn about the divine world.
The publisher Islamic Services Foundation are grateful to the family of Shaikh Ali Tantatwi for permitting us to republish his book in a textbook format, and bring it to the attention of unlimited numbers of students and readers in the US and around the world. It should be noted that Shaikh Ali Tantawi's work is the main text body of this book. However, in the process of developing this great work into a textbook, we had to supply some necessary, but minor, modifications and add needed materials in distinct forms, such as side boxes, readers, related texts and other noticeable formats.
