Living in Allah’s Presence: Aspects of Islamic Spirituality introduces the natural human characteristics (fitrah) that are universally considered to be praiseworthy. In the Qur’an, Islam is referred to as al-din al-fitrah, meaning that the human being is, by his very nature, inclined to submit to the Will of Allah, and is inclined towards goodness. These Qur’anic concepts like sincerity, truthfulness, humility, morality, modesty and steadfastness underpin the Islamic value system.
The reflections on these key concepts presented in this book guide the reader towards moral excellence and self-purification, which is achieved lead to the establishment of justice, living a life in Allah’s Presence and building a true relationship with Him, striving to fulfill His Will on earth and seeking His Pleasure in the afterlife.

Du'a (supplication) is the essence of worship. It is the weapon of the believer. With it we can never fail; without it we can never succeed. It is a whispering conversation with Allah, the most uplifting, liberating, empowering, and transforming conversation one can ever have.

Dawud Wharnsby Ali
Dawud Wharnsby Ali's unconventional approaches to writing and religion challenge paradigms of how we look at our own lives in relation to others and the world through which we all journey. This book collects together all the lyrics that have inspired communities of all faiths around the world for over two decades. Dawud’s work as a writer, inspired in part by his deep respect for spiritual scriptures and the Qur'an in particular. Dawud Wharnsby's recordings and reputation have established him as an institution in the realm of English language Nasheed (spiritual songs of a world-rhythm/folk style, drawn from Islamic cultural and musical roots). In true folk-song tradition, his writings have taken on a life of their own - spreading far beyond officially targeted territories by way of a bootleg industry which circulates his recordings unofficially and uncontrollably throughout the world. Though distribution of Wharnsby's material is difficult to gage, his efforts have spawned an artistic movement and musical industry of young artists hailing from Los Angeles, London, Jakarta and all stops in between.
Review: “Dawud Wharnsby’s poems are the very essence of a spiritual journey – words for our minds and words for our hearts.” - Tariq Ramadan
Excerpt: There was nothing more to say. There was sun-snow as I drove away. Back home was the only place to go, and I did not know, I would never see her after that day

Rafey Habib
Shades of Islam is a dazzling and moving collection of poetry that addresses faith, love, politics and Islam in the twenty-first century.
Reviews "The poems of Rafey Habib offer a window onto the sensibility of a modern American Muslim, with unflinching honesty and richly informed compassion. The great humanistic tradition of poetry known in Arabic and other Eastern languages here finds a contemporary English voice, which will be recognized like a lost friend who has unaccountably been rediscovered."
- Carl W. Ernst, William R. Kenan, Junior, Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies, UNC-Chapel Hill.
"I find [the poems] deeply moving and beautifully felt and written with simplicity and a profundity that is wholly disarming."
- Harold Schweizer, Professor of English, Bucknell University.
"Over the past half a century, the most politically engaged literature has predominantly emerged from cultures outside the wealthy transatlantic worlds. This collection of poems is a formidable reminder of the capacities and the necessities to connect issues of justice, rights, and religion on a global scale."
- Renate Holub Director, Interdisciplinary Studies, University of California, Berkeley
"I applaud...both the courage of this poetry, and the development of what is today practically a novel poetic form, the extended public meditation in lyric form. It reminds me a lot of the early Auden and Day Lewis; and it shows great promise. So much else passing itself off these days as poetry looks utterly trivial alongside it."
- Chris Fitter Associate Professor of English, Rutgers University
